About

Our mission is to provide opportunities for hands-on research and outreach in industrial and applied mathematics in our community.  Open to Cal Poly Pomona students and faculty, we are supported by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, the College of Science, and a number of sponsors from the robotics industry.

We explore

  • hands-on applications of math in industry
  • robotics
  • kinematics and control
  • computer vision
  • programming
  • machine learning
  • data science
  • modeling
  • simulation
  • visualization
  • creating educational demonstrations, videos, and activities

using

  • linear algebra
  • advanced calculus and differential equations
  • differential and algebraic geometry
  • topology
  • analysis
  • and more

Contour Surface Sanding

Another highlight. Keep this tight; visitors should grasp it in a few seconds.

Research is Fun: Dr. Caine tried this demonstration on a 3D printed contour surface. The friction from the sander generated so much heat that the surface melted and the sander's head became perminately embedded in it.

3D Surface Pipecleaner Models

We put together this activity to help students explore using traces to understand three-dimensional surfaces.   Each pipecleaner is a trace of the surface, and students can compare these to their corresponding equations.  This gives students a hands-on way to interact with three-dimensional equations

Research is Fun: Student Sylvia Wagner asked her siblings (ages 18 and 9) to test this activity, and they did it much faster than she did!
